Tales of Pizza: Part Four: Barquitos

When I was a young student of Richmond Public Schools, we were often served a very weird pizza-like dish called "barquitos" for lunch in the cafeterium (cafeteria+auditorium+gymnasium).  I have NEVER been able to find out anything about barquito pizza on the internet. I did however, find out that barquito means little boat in Spanish.

A barquito is basically a french bread pizza topped with seasoned taco meat (probably left over lunch the day before) and cheddar cheese.  I feel like maybe there was a similar dish with sloppy joe meat but who can really be sure. I have done my best to block out school lunch from my memories.

What is this dish? I only ever had it in elementary school. Is it the concoction of a lunch lady? Is it a real food item? What is a barquito?

didn't it have bbq sauce instead of pizza sauce?

maybe. I don't remember if it had sauce or not. I guess it probably did if it was just taco meat. If it was sloppy joe meat, well, that is pretty saucy already.

We had then in Ne. too. they had like a cornmeal crust and toppings and covered in cheddar cheese. Actually i found them many yrs later the Schwans company sold them but they no longer do. :(

The Schwan man use to deliver barquitos to our home in Texas. I am not sure if Virginia has Schwan but if so, I bet that is where the school got them from. They no longer sale them though, but personally I LOVE them :) It was like a shredded meat with taco seasoning and cheese in a "boat" :)

I've been asking about Barquitos for YEARS! I attended Richmond Public Schools, and I would give mine away because of the smell..one day I pinched off a piece, and tasted it.. I was so mad at myself for giving them away for so long..

Yes schwans did sale the barquitos and they were a cornmeal crust filled with beef and bean and topped with cheese. i think if enough people go to schwans and ask them to bring them back they will. i asked them but i am sure that they need more than one request in order to bring them back. they are so yummy.

I went to RPS too. I remember them at Henderson. That was about the only time the cafeteria was packed for those and peanut butter cookies in the wax paper. The Schwans truck used to have them but it was discontinued years ago. I cant find them anywhere.

I have been feenin' for three things for YEARS!!! These are the ONLY school lunch item I can remember eating and world STILL gladly give up my lunch money to have. Anyone think of starting a petition to the Schwan company to bring them back? I think I am going to write the company...these things still haunt us RPS students, well into adulthood (I'm 36!!) LOL

Omgeee my husband just asked me to Google barquito. He just raved about how good it was. I think you are correct it was leftovers that apparently made alot of kids happy.

Omg.......I'm not alone, Whitcomb Elementary and Mosby Middle (RPS) and I too am in search of the oh so great barquito, it does feel good to know that I'm not alone or insane so many years later and still in search of a school lunch meal...lol

Anonymous said...

Nah no pizza sauce or bbq guys. I have been trying to recreate it for years lol. If u put taco meat on a pizza it's close though. Best I did was leave my taco meat saucy and put it on the dough and layer it with cheddar cheese. It came out almost identical to the good ol barquito taste. Good luck & good eating!!!

George Mason,Mosby,Armstrong....I can still taste them after all these years..I remember Schwan's selling them...don't know why they discontinued them but I'm down for the cause...
