Freezer Finds : Preheat the oven: Richmond is having a peak frozen pizza moment. Locally made frozen pizzas abound in Richmond. (Photo courtesy Billy Pie) An ice-cold pizza craze is taking over Richmond. The capital city is home to several burgeoning frozen pizza brands, many born of pandemic pivots as ways to save inventory, grow sales and expand options for folks dining at home. But the easy, pop-in-the-oven pick-me-ups have stuck around. From Chicago deep-dish and hand-tossed sourdough to neo-Neapolitan and vegan varieties, frozen pizzas are packing the coolers at an array of local establishments. Billy Pie For over two decades, baker Billy Fallen supplied Richmond’s eateries and grocers with remarkable sourdough bread, pasta, and pizza.   MARCH 2025 March is Women in Pizza Month ! Cheers to all the nonnas, mamas, wives, daughters, workers, and entrepreneurs who keep the dough twirling. The first slice goes to these local ladies making history in the Richmond, Virginia pizza scene.  Black Olive Pizzeria RVA. 13 W. Broad St. LaChan Toran, Owner. The Black Olive RVA has opened in the former Switch spot on Broad Street, owned by LaChan Toran of MaryLou’s Soul Dining Experience . The new pizzeria features a fusion of Hip-Hop, R&B, and Italian-inspired cuisine, live music and DJs. Redemption currently offers the only authentic Chicago-style deep-dish pizza for miles.  Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, hot deep-dish deliverance is available at Redemption BBQ & Market by advance order only. These pizzas take about an hour to make so be sure to order ahead by calling the shop. There are a few tables for dining in or you can take one to go. They also offer frozen pizzas you can take and bake at home. A 9’ pizza yields 4 hefty slices. The open secret Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza offering started as a love letter to Vest’s wife, Anna, a native of Chicago. NASA Pizza Printer

NASA is funding a 3D food printer and the first food they are going to print is PIZZA! DUH! Apparently NASA is forking over $250,000 to Systems and Materials Research Corporation (SMRC) in Austin, TX for Anjan Contractor, a senior mechanical engineer there to build a prototype of a food synthesizer he has already been working on. Early tests included printed chocolate. The technology could potentially be used to print food for astronauts on extended or long-distance missions. I think the layered assembly and basic toppings make the project ideal for 3D food printing. NASA is finally putting their budget to good use! This a step towards making a real replicator !
