Worst pizza in America

Men's Health magazine recently posted their annual list of the worst foods in America. This list features the foods served in fast food and casual dining restaurants with the most calories, fat, sodium, etc.
So what's their result for the worst pizza? A Chicago deep dish pizza, DUH!

Men's Health declared Uno's Chicago Grill Chicago Classic Deep Dish Pizza as the worst pizza in the USA.

Here's the damage:
2,310 calories
162 g fat
123 g carbs
4,470 mg sodium

From Men's Health: "Downing this "personal" pizza is equivalent to eating 18 slices of Domino's Crunchy Thin Crust cheese pizza."
WHEW! What a doozy! You can read Matt Goulding's complete Eat This Not That list on the Men's Health website.

NEW Pizza Vending Machine!

Yahoo News recently reported on a new pizza vending machine that will hit the streets of Italy in just a few weeks. REAL Italian chefs say that there's just no comparing a machine pizza to the real thing.

Fire at Totonno's!

picture: txokolarte
The New York Daily News recently reported on a devestating fire at famed NY Pizzeria, Totonno's. The Neptune Ave. location in Brooklyn burned on march 14th. The fire bagan around 9:30 a.m. in the oven spread to the roof and and was fueled by the coal used to bake pizza.

No one was injured in the fire. However, there is extensive damage at what is known to many as the best pizza parlour in New York, some say even the world. The Zagat guide once said of the beloved spot that "Only God makes better pizza." Owner, Louise Crimineri said that they plan to re-open.

According to the Totonno's website, the Napolitano style, brick oven pizza company was started in Coney Island 1924 by Anthony “Totonno” Pero and has stayed in the family ever since. The original Coney Island location is still standing today, and is oldest continuously operating pizzeria in the U.S. Since the 20's the company has grown and opened several locations in Yonkers, Manhattan and Brooklyn. Today third and fourth generation pizziolas are continuing the 85 year tradition in their coal burning brick ovens.

I tried to call Totonno's for comment but, naturally, the phone was very busy. I'll try to keep up with what's going on with Totonno's and keep you guys posted.

Candy Pizza!

I found this marshmallow pizza at For the Love Of Chocolate in Carytown. FTLOC also has fried eggs, camera film, hotdogs, cheese burgers, sardines, poker chips, and crickets all made of candy!
For the Love Of Chocolate is located at 3136 W Cary St. Richmond, VA 23221 (804) 359-5645

Of course you can make a REAL candy pizza using this recipe from the Betty Crocker website. It calls for a peanut butter cookie crust (made from a packaged mix), marshmallows, coconut, chocolate, carmel, and nuts. Check out the delicious recipe here.

Here are some other delicious (read: disgusting) candy pizzas I found on the internet:

This is the Frankford Gummy Pizza as documented by the author of the blog 50000000 Sparber Fans Can't Be Wrong. This pizza includes what looks like a Peeps style "crust," candy syrup "sauce," Pixie stick "cheese" and various other toppings. The Blog even includes a short photo essay of consumption. The verdict? a plastic pizza experience. Very amusing!

This is the E. Frutti Gummi Pizza. "Each pizza is packed in its own card board and cellophane box for easy delivery to your mouth. Reheating or microwaving is not recommended! There are 5 gummy pizza slices per box."

Finally here is the Fear Factor Gross-Out Gummy Pizza. Modeled after the pizza from the show, this treat features "crunchy candy fish eyes, worms, and stinky cheese. Flavors include bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, pepperoni, lemon, lime, tropical fruit, sour grape, strawberry, butter, and chocolate.

Delicious Capitalism!

This is a 1997 Pizza Hut ad starring Mikhail Gorbachev (and his granddaughter). It pretty much suggests that communism is wack because you can't have pizza when you're a communist.
Read more about Little Czar's Pizza (HA!) at CNN.

From CNN:
"...pizza is a special kind of food, Gorbachev says, because it does what he always wanted to do: It brings people together. "It's an important part of life," he said. "It's not only consumption, it's also socializing. If I didn't see that it was beneficial for people, I wouldn't have agreed to it."

"Sergei Tatosyan, the manager of the Moscow eatery where the ad was filmed, said it will not be shown in Russia, where Gorbachev is still widely disliked and blamed for the 1991 Soviet downfall."

Vegan Pizza Video

Delicious Vegan Pizza Anyone?
This yummy tutorial from Sklarm will show you how to make a vegan pizza with lots of herbs and tons of veggies. This recipe also calls for soy cheese and fresh tomatoes instead of sauce. I like to make vegan pizzas with no cheese at all. Even though it tastes good, soy cheese never seems to melt right.
Check it out for yourself! Let me know how it turns out.
