Food Porn for Pizza Groupies

Anthony Mangieri. I love you. I want you to make sweet, sweet love (and a pizza) to me next to your beautiful brick oven. This awesome photo is from Morta Di Fame's Jennifer Galtioto.

Anthony Mangieri was the pizzaiolowner of the NYC East Village's famed Una Pizza Napoletana. Handsome, tattooed and covered in a nice dusting of flour! Mangieri's place was cash only and once the fresh dough is gone he closed up shop for the day. According to the Gothamist, Mangieri once boldly claimed that ""[i]n my opinion, there's no good pizza" in New York."

Mangieri's joint is closed now. In July, Ed Levine reported on Slice that Mangieri sold Una Pizza Napoletana to Motorino's Mathieu Palombino and his partners. The shop closed and Levine reported that Mangieri and Palombino would be making pies together at the UPN space, at the sold-out Pieman's Craft events sponsored by Slice and Serious Eats at the 2009 food Network NYC Wine and Food Festival next weekend. Ed Levine and Adam Kuban will also be there.

I cannot tell you how badly I wish I could be there to see all kings of pizza, dukes of dough, and sultans of sauce. I wanna meet all those pizzalicious dudes that I have been following around the Internet! Anyone with a heart of gold and an extra $60 for a Chinatown Bus ticket to NYC next weekend please contact me at lauren.vincelli(at)yahoo.com. I'd drop everything to go.

UPDATE: My sister Maya has a heart of gold and I'll be in NYC this weekend with her. Woop woop!

Ladies check out his oven! I'm so glad that his space is re-opening in some form or another because it would be a shame for this oven to go to waste. According to NY Magazine, Mangieri's 4,000 pound, wood burning oven was made in a shroud of secrecy by Neapolitan oven artisans. The shop had to be closed for three weeks and it cost $19,000 when all was said and done. Pizzas can be baked in this baby in 40 seconds flat at temperatures up to 1,000 degrees fahrenheit. The oven is gorgeous too. Mangieri tiled the facade himself with tiny, white hexagonal tiles and a portrait of Saint Florian, the patron saint of fire workers. I wanna put a bun in that oven. Heyoooo! Check out the other thrilling and sexy details of his oven here.

On to the Food Porn: A few other pizza bloggers have already posted this video, but I gotta bite it because it is just too awesome. Check out this beautiful short film of Anthony Mangieri making pies at Una Pizza Napoletana. This short film, Naturally Risen was directed by Michael Evans and features a very sexy score from Tommy Gurrero (one of my favorite make-out musicians).

Here's another video. Check it out.

Lauren!!!

Even if you get on that Chinatown bus, how are you gonna get in to the event. It's been sold out forever. As much as I'd like to sell you mine, I can't imagine missing it for any amount of money. And BTW, in addition to the othe goodies, Pizzablogger and I plan on bringing homemade
Limoncello.

And one more thing; that photo is amazing.

Paulie, do you mean the photo of the oven or Anthony? They're both pretty great.

Save me some Limoncello! I'm coming up with Maya (Brawling Barista) this weekend Una Pizzarino or no Una Pizzarino. Plus I wanna meet Pizzablogger!

I was referring to the Mangieri shot. The oven photo is nice because it was a stunningly beautiful oven, but the AM is is a uniquely styled image. And don't worry, I'll be sure to save plenty of Linoncello for you and your sisters.
